Vanity

Learn, and preach,
Teach, and be haughty.
Naught runs course and lives;
Life dwindles as a candle dances.
Time ticks away at opportunities
And each is only rewarded
For how his past days
Have been spent by him.
That which is,
already has been.
That which will be,
already has been.
And God seeks what has been driven away.
Have grace, says the neck-tie gentleman
And read to learn, learn to read
People. Balance and grace, grace and balance,
And through this, have faith.
Be glad, God speaks not:
He lets alone his course set,
Showing just how to run and
Not how to make good use of time.
That which is,
already has been.
That which will be,
already has been.
And God seeks what has been driven away.
No future: Past.
Passed from one moment to the other,
One opportunity passed up for another,
Already passed up cannot be traded back for another.
We haven’t a hope in choice,
For choice is not our own,
But choice is given to us
That we seek what has been driven away.
That which is,
already has been.
That which will be,
already has been.
And God seeks what has been driven away.
